Aloha Hybsscus Summer

Sometimes the most beautifully detailed aspects of God’s creation are right in front of us, if we just take a moment to have a closer look.

Now, I was just about to say, “look up from our devices”, but that would be a somewhat ironic thing for an ecommerce brand owner to say. But still, it is true.

So yes, take a few moments each day to look down at the minutiae and study the details in creation design. Look up at the magnificence of what He’s hung up in the sky, or across the vast landscape of our planet and universe.

A walk in the yard

This all started as I was walking around our backyard to plan out what yard maintenance was needed that day. I happened to notice some roses and other flowers that were in full bloom. As I took a closer look, I was intrigued and amazed at the vibrant colors, intricate design, and overwhelming beauty of such a fragile and temporary piece of nature.

I snapped some pics and shared them with Britt. We both commented on how stunning they were. In fact, she later went down and used them as observational subjects for the science lesson she was teaching our two homeschoolers.

That led me to consider, what other bits of creation in my yard I’ve routinely passed by, unnoticed, on a daily basis.

The row of hibiscus bushes (trees? shrubs? I dunno) out front had tons of flowers on them. I stepped closer and used my device to have a closer look. Amazing.

And that is when the idea for the Hybsscus Collection was born.

I was actually a little disappointed that I hadn’t thought of this before. The hibiscus flower is almost synonymous with aloha. I would argue that it’s the definitive icon.

ALOHA

  • “Akahai” :: meaning kindness to be expressed with tenderness;
  • Lōkahi” :: meaning unity, to be expressed with harmony;
  • ʻOluʻolu” :: meaning agreeable, to be expressed with pleasantness;
  • Haʻahaʻa” :: meaning humility, to be expressed with modesty;
  • Ahonui” :: meaning patience, to be expressed with perseverance.

What better way to start off a series of beach & surf themed collections, than with the hibiscus flower?

Tech enhances nature, sometimes

Compared to early digital cameras, iPhone technology these days is so unbelievably amazing that it’s almost silly. Starting with one of the shots I had taken, I isolated the flower in iPhone, and then imported it into Inkscape.

From there, I went through several super, duper top secret proprietary steps to convert the image into a vector object, and then create a variety of the designs you now see on our product line.

So know that you are getting a truly original and exclusive Sonshine Surf Co product when you purchase something from our Hybsscus Collection.

When browsing our shop, you’ll notice some new products, aside from what’s in the Hybsscus Collection. And some will have already guessed what the next collection will be.

Oh yeah – the website thing

This has become a rather uninteresting afterthought at this point. But since I said I’d mention it in my last post, I will make good on that.

Basically, I have been wanting to migrate to a webhost who offered solutions that would increase performance and reliability of the website. I also needed something that could scale up as we grow. Because yes – with your help – we are going to grow.

In that process, I decided to undertake a major renovation of the website. Almost from the bottom up. Fail early, fail often is the Silicon Valley mantra. Or something.

Moving forward, I firmly believe this was the right move building for the future.
